pale

/ˈpeɪɫ/ adj B1, C1

**Pale** describes anything washed out in hue, from a ghostly sunrise to a frightened face. It can label a lackluster shade, a sickly complexion, or a feeble effort. As a verb it means to lose color, as when a surprise drains the blood from your cheeks. As a noun it can refer to something that has become insignificant, a shadow of its former self. Think of a wilted daisy, a timid accountant, or a once‑important idea now reduced to a whisper.

Word Origin Pale has two Latin roots that merged: pallere 'to be pale' and palus 'stake.' The color sense gives us pallid and pallor, while the stake sense gives us impale (to pierce with a stake) and palisade (a fence of stakes). Appall originally meant 'to make pale' with shock. So pale can mean both 'light in color' and 'a boundary stake' — the latter survives in 'beyond the pale' (outside the fence).
