advance

/ədˈvæns/ verb A2, B1, B2

**Advance** means to move forward in space, time, or development, like a spaceship slipping past a star system. It also describes the act of giving or receiving something before it is due, such as an advance on a paycheck. When you advance a claim, you push it ahead of the usual schedule, often to secure an advantage or meet a deadline. The noun form can refer to a forward movement of troops, a technological breakthrough, or a monetary loan given in anticipation of future earnings. Use it whenever progress or forwardness is the core idea, and feel free to sprinkle it into both literal and figurative contexts.

Word Origin Advance is a bit of a mash-up: it comes from Latin ab- 'from, away' and ante 'before', via Old French. The idea: moving forward, away from where you were, to a position before others. The ante root gives us antecedent, anterior, antique — all about being before. And ab- gives us absent, abstract, abuse — things that are away or off.
