liability

/ˌɫaɪəˈbɪɫɪti/ noun B2

**Liability** is the legal responsibility to settle a debt or fulfill an obligation, especially in financial contexts. It also denotes a drawback or weakness that can hinder a person or organization. In accounting, liabilities appear on the balance sheet opposite assets and are classified as current when due within a year or long‑term when repayment stretches farther into the future. A company’s total liabilities reveal how much it owes and help gauge financial health. Outside the ledger, calling someone a liability humorously flags them as a source of trouble or extra work.

Word Origin 'Liable' comes from Old French 'lier' (to bind), from Latin 'ligare' (to bind). 'Liability' is the state of being bound — legally or otherwise. The root 'ligare' ties together 'ligament' (a binding tissue), 'religion' (re- + ligare, to bind back, obligation), 'ally' (bind to), 'oblige' (bind to), and 'liaison' (a binding).
