blight

/ˈbɫaɪt/ noun B2, C2

Blight is a fungal or bacterial disease that withers plants, often wiping out orchards or fields with a grim efficiency. The term also stretches to describe anything that spoils, depresses, or devastates a community, such as a faulty factory or a crumbling neighbourhood. When you say a project has been blighted, you’re pinning the blame on a corrosive influence that spreads like a bad rash. The word can slip into verb form—to blight—signalling the act of causing decay, whether it’s the rust eating away at a bridge or gossip eroding a reputation. Use it when you need a single, vivid label for a relentless, undesirable force.

Word Origin Blight first appeared in Middle English as a term for a plant withering disease. Its origin is uncertain, but it may be related to Old Norse 'blettr' 'spot, stain' — as if the plant becomes spotted and ruined. The word later extended to anything that spoils or damages, and a blighter is a person who causes blight, a nuisance.
