foster

/ˈfɑstɝ/ verb B1, B2, C1

**Foster** means to nurture and support growth, whether of a child, an idea, or a relationship. In families, a foster parent provides a temporary home. In business, a manager might foster innovation. Use it when you want to convey active encouragement. The verb works with people, places, and concepts. For example, a school might foster teamwork, a city might foster green spaces, and a friend might foster confidence in another.

【核心含义】培养、促进,指对成长发展(如儿童、想法、关系等)给予支持和培育。

常与"能力/创新/氛围/关系"等抽象概念搭配,强调主动提供成长环境而非直接控制结果。注意与"adopt(收养)"的法定含义区别。

【Significado central】 Un niño o niña criado/a por personas que no son sus padres biológicos; es decir, un hijo o hija de crianza.

(Arcaico/literario) En inglés moderno, "foster" como sustantivo es muy poco frecuente y aparece sobre todo en textos históricos o literarios, como en "The king's only foster was a daughter of remarkable intelligence". Su forma más habitual en uso actual es la expresión compuesta "foster child" (niño acogido) o "foster son/daughter" (hijo/hija de crianza). En español se traduce como "hijo de crianza", "niño acogido" o "alumno en hogar de guarda". Importante: no debe confundirse con "adoptado" en sentido legal, ya que "foster" suele implicar una relación de cuidado temporal, sin los mismos derechos de filiación que la adopción definitiva.

Word Origin Foster originally meant to feed, nourish — it comes from Old English fostor 'food, rearing', from the PIE root *peh₂- 'to feed, protect'. That same root gives us food, feed, fodder, and even pastor (a shepherd who feeds the flock) and pantry (a place for food). So foster is literally 'feeding', and the idea of raising a child not one's own grew from that nourishing sense.
