accident

/ˈæksədənt/ noun A1, A2

An accident is a surprise mishap that lands you in trouble without your consent, typically arising from pure chance rather than human design. It can be the fender‑bender that rattles your car, the sudden tumble of a falling object, or any random event that tips the odds against you. In philosophy it also labels any fact or relation that exists merely by luck and bears no essential weight.

La expresión "por accidente" equivale a "by chance / by accident".

Word Origin Accident is literally 'a falling towards' — from Latin ad- 'to' and cadere 'to fall'. It's something that befalls you unexpectedly. The same cadere root gives us incident (a falling in), coincide (falling together), and cadaver (a fallen body). The idea of chance events as 'falls' is vivid: you can almost see the mishap tumbling your way.
