intent

/ˌɪnˈtɛnt/ noun B2

**Intent** is a decided purpose that guides an action, the inner compass pointing toward a particular outcome. It is the mental state that says, “I will do this.” The word works both as a noun and an adjective; a jury looks for criminal intent, while a student may study with intent. When someone watches you with intent eyes, they are fixed, undistracted, feeling the same resolve. Use the term whenever you want to stress that a deed springs from a clear, pre‑planned aim rather than from accident or habit.

Word Origin Intent comes from Latin intendere 'to stretch toward,' from in- 'toward' + tendere 'to stretch.' So an intent is a stretching of the mind toward a goal. The same root tendere gives us extend (stretch out), attend (stretch toward), and tension (the state of being stretched).
