vena

/ˈvinə/ noun

**Vena** is a blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart. In human anatomy it refers especially to the thin‑walled vessels that return deoxygenated blood from the tissues. Veins have thinner walls than arteries and use one‑way valves to keep blood moving upward against gravity. Their internal pressure is modest, so they expand easily when blood pools. The largest of them, the superior and inferior vena cava, funnel blood from the body into the right atrium. Medical writers use the term to label any vein in descriptive passages, from the delicate retinal vena to the sturdy femoral vena.

Word Origin Directly from Latin vena, meaning both a blood vessel and a vein of ore — the idea of something running through like a channel. That's why we have intravenous (into the vein) and venation (the arrangement of veins in a leaf or insect wing). The word itself is unchanged, a pure Latin borrowing.
