scene

/ˈsin/ noun A2, B1, B2

A **scene** is a place where something happens, whether it’s the backdrop of a play, the setting of a photograph, or the spot where a story unfolds. It can also be a short segment of a larger work, such as a movie or a play, that focuses on a particular action or dialogue. When you talk about a bustling city **scene**, you’re describing the atmosphere, the people, and the activity that give the place its character. In theater, a scene changes when the lighting shifts or the curtain rises on a new location. Filmmakers cut from scene to scene to control pacing and keep viewers oriented. Writers often use the word to paint a vivid snapshot: a moonlit countryside scene or a tense courtroom scene.

Combinaciones útiles: "escena del crimen" (crime scene), "aparecer en escena" (to appear on the scene), "hacer una escena" (to make a scene/scandal).

Word Origin Scene comes from Greek skēnē 'tent, booth' — the backdrop on a stage. Originally, it was the covered area where actors changed costumes. That's why we have scenery (the stage setting), scenic (picturesque like a stage), and proscenium (the area in front of the scene). The PIE root *skhā- 'to cover' also gives us shade and shadow. So a scene is literally a covered, shadowed space for drama.
