vote

/ˈvoʊt/ verb A1, A2, B1, B2

**Vote** is a formal choice on matters from electing a mayor to settling a lawsuit, the act of dropping a ballot, a heartfelt pledge whispered to the universe, a polite petition to a higher authority, or the mental tally that turns a gut feeling into a declared opinion. It turns private preference into public power, often with a piece of paper or a digital click.

常与“cast/place a vote”(投票)、“take a vote”(表决)搭配;注意与“veto”(否决)的发音和词义区别。

Word Origin Vote comes from Latin vovere 'to vow, promise'—so casting a vote is literally making a solemn vow. That's why we have vow, votive (a candle lit in fulfillment of a vow), and devote (to vow oneself completely to something). The ancient root meant 'to speak solemnly'.
