belief

/bɪˈɫif/ noun A1, B1

**Belief** is the mental handshake that says, “I’m taking this idea as true,” whether it’s built on evidence, trust, or the comforting glow of faith. It can be a single notion, a whole religion, or the general habit of believing. In everyday life it’s the engine that powers everything from trusting a friend’s promise to accepting the existence of the universe.

Word Origin Belief comes from Proto-Germanic *laub- 'to hold dear, love, trust' — so belief originally meant 'that which you hold dear or trust'. The same root gives us love (from Old English lufu), beloved, and even leave (originally 'to allow, to hold dear' — giving permission). The PIE root *leubh- also gives us libido (desire). So belief is deeply connected to love and desire.
