anger

/ˈæŋɡɝ/ noun A1, B1

Anger is the hot, buzzing furnace inside you that flares up when you feel slighted, threatened, or treated unfairly, often urging you to shout, curse, or smash something. It can sting like a sudden pain and can be spread to others by provoking them. It also describes the act of making someone else feel that furnace. In short, anger is the brain's way of shouting “Enough!” at the world.

Word Origin Anger comes from a root meaning 'narrow, tight' — think of a constricted feeling. The same root gives us 'angst' (anxiety), 'anguish' (severe pain), and 'angina' (chest tightness). So anger is literally a tight, painful emotion. The PIE root *angh- captures that squeezing sensation.
