affection

/əˈfɛkʃən/ noun B1

**Affection** is the warm, fuzzy glow you feel toward a person, animal, or thing that makes you want to hug it, smile at it, or say nice things about it. It’s the emotional glue that turns acquaintances into friends and friends into loved ones. Affection shows up in many guises, from a quick pat to a lingering gaze, and it works in a mother’s lullaby as well as a lover’s whisper. The intensity ranges from mild fondness for a favorite mug to deep devotion for a lifelong partner. Because it is a feeling, it can be voiced, touched, or simply shared through time. It grows when the sentiment is returned.

Word Origin Affection comes from Latin ad- 'to' and facere 'to do' — literally 'done to.' It originally meant an influence or disposition, then evolved to mean a warm feeling. The same facere root gives us affect, effect, fact, and factory.
