It can also describe a sudden, overwhelming rush, like a wave of emotion. In everyday speech you might hear someone say they were assaulted by a bus driver’s rude shout, but legally the term splits into two cousins: the violent act itself, often called battery, and the mere attempt or threat, which still counts as assault.
