alloy

/ˈæˌɫɔɪ/ noun B2

**Alloy** is a blend of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, that fuses into a single, usually solid, material. The mixture inherits the best traits of its parts while leaving the less useful ones behind. Because the proportions of each component can be tweaked, engineers create alloys to suit specific jobs: stainless steel resists rust, bronze sings in musical instruments, and pewter gleams in decorative trinkets. The term works for any metal‑based combination, whether the ingredients melt together or simply bond at the atomic level. Use **alloy** when you want to emphasize that the material is a purposeful, engineered hybrid rather than a pure element.

Word Origin From Latin ad- 'to' and ligare 'to bind' — literally 'to bind together.' When you alloy metals, you're binding them into a new mixture. The same ligare root gives us ligament (binds bones), oblige (bind by duty), and religion (re+ligare, binding back to the divine). Ally is a close cousin: someone bound to you.
