stain

/ˈsteɪn/ noun A2, B1, B2

Stain is a way a spill can turn a white shirt into a tiny map of its own misadventure, and it can also be the scar left on a reputation after a careless remark. In the lab, a stain is a dye that sneaks into cells so we can actually see what’s inside. In heraldry, a stain is one of those quirky tinctures like tenné or sanguine that add a splash of drama to a coat of arms.

Word Origin A fascinating blend: the word stain comes partly from Latin stinguere 'to quench, extinguish' (as in extinguish, distinct) and partly from Proto-Germanic stainaz 'stone' (as in stone). The idea of a stain is something that discolors, like a mark that 'quenches' the original color, or perhaps a stone-like spot. The Latin root gives us distinct (marked off) and instinct (inner prompting).
