constituent

/kənˈstɪtʃuənt/ noun

A **constituent** is any part that combines with others to form a larger whole, whether it’s a chemical ingredient, a piece of a puzzle, or a citizen who votes in a district. In politics a constituent is the person represented by an elected official, while in chemistry it’s the element that makes up a compound. The word fits both concrete and abstract worlds, covering everything from sodium in salt to clauses in a sentence. When you talk about the constituents of a government, you count the people who hand in ballots, and policies they favor remain a separate discussion. In grammar, a constituent is a word or group of words that functions as a unit within a sentence structure.

Word Origin Constituent comes from Latin con- 'together' and statuere 'to set up, place' — literally 'setting up together.' A constituent is a component that, with others, constitutes a whole. The statuere root (from PIE *sta- 'stand') gives us statute, statue, and institution.
