tumor

/ˈtumɝ/ noun B1, C1

**Tumor** is an abnormal lump of tissue that arises when cells grow without the usual checks and balances. It can develop in any organ or tissue and may be felt as a swelling or discovered by imaging. Tumors fall into two broad categories: benign tumors, which stay localized and rarely threaten life, and malignant tumors, which invade surrounding tissue and can spread through the body as cancer. Doctors identify the type by examining the cells under a microscope and by noting how the mass behaves. Treatment ranges from simple removal to chemotherapy, depending on the tumor’s nature.

Word Origin Tumor comes from Latin tumere 'to swell,' and it literally means 'a swelling.' The PIE root *teuh- 'to swell' also gives us thigh (the swollen part of the leg), thumb (the swollen finger), and even tomb (originally a mound of earth, a swelling in the ground). So tumor is part of a family of words all about bulging and expanding. Related words like tumid (swollen) and tumescent (becoming swollen) keep the medical sense alive.
