/ˈɹumɝ/ noun B1, C1A **rumor** is a piece of information that circulates without solid proof. It often spreads by word of mouth, hovering between fact and fiction. Because it lacks verification, a rumor can be harmless gossip or a weaponized whisper that fuels panic. Speakers may pass it along because it sounds plausible, entertaining, or fits a desired narrative. When you describe something as a rumor, you signal that its truth is uncertain and that it’s being talked about widely.
