orbit

/ˈɔɹbət/ noun A1, A2, B1

The path a planet or satellite follows as it circles a star or planet, a celestial highway. In human terms, it’s the zone where a person’s influence or interests revolve, like a celebrity’s fan base. In anatomy, it’s the eye socket, the bony cradle for the eyeball. Mathematicians use it for the set of points generated by a dynamical system’s evolution, and group theorists call it the collection of positions an element can reach under allowed transformations. All of these share the idea of things moving around a centre.

Word Origin From Latin 'orbita', meaning a wheel-rut or track, which came from 'orbis' (circle, ring). So an orbit is literally a circular track. The word 'orb' itself gives us 'orbicular' (round), and 'exorbitant' means 'out of the track' — straying from the normal path, hence excessive. So when a planet orbits, it's following a cosmic wheel-rut.
