exigent

/ˈɛksɪdʒənt/ adj C1

**Exigent** describes situations that demand immediate attention; it signals urgency and pressure. An exigent circumstance pushes people to act quickly and decisively. The term can qualify tasks, deadlines, or conditions that are pressing; a manager may call an exigent meeting to address a crisis. In legal language, an exigent claim is one that must be satisfied promptly, often because delay would cause harm. Use it whenever you need to convey that something cannot wait.

Word Origin From Latin 'exigere' — ex- 'out' + agere 'to drive' — literally 'to drive out, demand, enforce'. Exigent means demanding immediate attention, pressing. The same root agere gives us act, agent, and navigate (drive a ship). The breakdown ex+ig+ent shows the prefix ex-, the root -ig- (from agere), and the adjective suffix -ent. Exigent is a great example of how 'driving out' became 'demanding'.
