/ˈhwaɪɫ/, /ˈwaɪɫ/ noun A1, B1**While** can be a slippery little noun that means an indefinite stretch of time, like “wait a while.” As a conjunction it lines up two actions, saying they happen at the same moment: “She sang while he cooked.” It also slides in to mean “although”: “While it rained, we still picnicked.” It can set a deadline, as in “Stay here while I fetch the coffee,” and it can act as a condition: “You may enter while you’re quiet.”
