hostage

/ˈhɑstɪdʒ/ noun B1, C1

A **hostage** is a person who is seized and kept against their will to force someone else to meet a demand. The captor treats the captive as leverage, an insurance policy that ensures their bargaining chip gets paid. Hostages appear in robberies, guerrilla warfare, and diplomatic crises, each time serving as a human bargaining chip. The term also stretches to inanimate things when they are held up as collateral for a goal, as in “the project became a hostage of endless approvals.” Use the word when you want to stress the power imbalance and the threat of harm if the conditions aren’t satisfied.

Word Origin From Latin hostis 'stranger, enemy' — a hostage was originally a person held as security by an enemy. The suffix -age (from Latin -aticum) forms a noun of condition. The root hostis is fascinating: it also gives us host (originally an army, then a person who receives guests — a stranger?), hostile, and even hospital and hospitality (from hospes, a compound of hostis and potis 'master', meaning a host who welcomes strangers). So the same root that means enemy also gives us hospitality — a great example of how words can flip meaning.
