infer

/ˌɪnˈfɝ/ verb B2, C1

**Infer** means to draw a conclusion from facts, clues, or hints that are not plainly stated. You act like a detective, piecing together the evidence until the picture clicks. The result lives in your mind, not on the page. Use infer when the knowledge originates from the listener’s side, as opposed to imply, which lives on the speaker’s side. It teams up with from— you can infer happiness from a grin or impending trouble from a stormy sky. Scholars love it for turning raw data into tidy conclusions, and everyday conversations enjoy it when you guess a friend's mood from their silence. The past tense follows the regular pattern: you inferred a meaning.

【核心含义】指根据事实、线索或暗示推断出未明说的结论。

常与“from”搭配(如infer from a smile),注意与“imply”(暗示)区分:推断是听者行为,暗示是说者行为。

Word Origin From Latin in- 'in, into' and ferre 'to bear, carry' — literally 'to carry in,' meaning to bring in a conclusion from evidence. The root ferre is incredibly prolific: confer (carry together), differ (carry apart), offer (carry to), prefer (carry before), refer (carry back), transfer (carry across). The PIE *bher- 'to carry' also gives us bear and burden.
