famous

/ˈfeɪməs/ adj A1, A2

**Famous** means everybody's favorite talking point, the person or thing that shows up on billboards, in gossip, and in history books. It also doubles as a compliment for something superb, like a **famous** pizza that wins awards. As a verb, it describes the act of turning a nobody into a household name, like a quirky inventor whose gadget goes viral. In short, if something is **famous**, the world has taken notice and generally thinks it’s pretty remarkable.

【核心含义】指人或事物因成就、特质或事件而被广泛知晓和谈论。

常与“for”连用说明出名原因(如:famous for its scenery);注意与“notorious”(臭名昭著)区分感情色彩。

Word Origin Famous comes from Latin fama 'reputation, rumor,' from fari 'to speak.' So famous literally means 'spoken about.' The same root gives us fable (a spoken story), fabulous (like a fable), and infant (in- 'not' + fari 'speak' — one who cannot speak). The word fame is the noun, and famous is the adjective with -ous. The PIE root *bha- 'to speak' also gives us confess and profess.
