mediocre

/ˌmidiˈoʊkɝ/ adj B2

**Mediocre** means average, neither great nor awful. It describes things that sit comfortably in the middle of the spectrum. It’s the kind of performance that keeps the universe running but doesn’t win any awards. Use it when you want to be honest without sounding cruel. Saying a pizza is mediocre tells the chef that it’s acceptable, yet it could do better. In conversation, it signals lukewarm approval, not a passionate endorsement. In writing, sprinkle it sparingly to avoid flatting prose.

Word Origin Mediocre literally means 'halfway up a mountain' — from Latin 'medius' 'middle' and 'ocris' 'jagged mountain'. The idea: not the peak, not the base, just middling. The same 'medius' gives us medium, mediate, medieval (middle age), and Mediterranean (middle of the land), while 'ocris' from PIE *h₂eḱ- 'sharp' also appears in acid and acrid.
