excite

/ɪkˈsaɪt/ verb A2

**Excite** means to stir feelings, to set electrons buzzing, or to give a magnet a jolt of energy. When something excites you, your heart does a little hop; when a photon excites an electron, it leaps to a higher orbit. In everyday talk, anything that makes you eager, thrilled, or nervous is said to excite you.

Word Origin From Latin ex- 'out' and ciere 'to call, rouse' — literally 'to call out' or 'stir up'. The idea is that excitement is a rousing of emotions, a summoning of energy. The same root ciere gives us cite (to call forth a source), incite (to stir up), and recite (to call back, repeat).
