enjoin

/ˌɛnˈdʒɔɪn/, /ɪnˈdʒɔɪn/ verb B2, C1

**Enjoin** means to give an authoritative order, usually in a legal setting, telling someone to do or not do something. A judge might enjoin a company from dumping waste into a river. The verb bears the weight of official power, a command that can be enforced by the courts. In older literature you may also see enjoin used to mean ‘to join together’, as when a poet enjoins two verses in a single stanza. Modern speakers reserve the term for formal injunctions, so slipping it into everyday chat sounds delightfully pompous.

Word Origin From Latin in- 'on' and jungere 'to join' — to enjoin is literally to join something onto someone, like an order or obligation. The root jungere gives us join, junction, yoke, and conjugal (joined in marriage). So when a court enjoins an action, it's yoking a legal obligation onto a person.
