despite

/dɪˈspaɪt/ prep B1, B2

**Despite** means in spite of, indicating that something happens regardless of an obstacle. It slips in front of a noun or a whole clause, telling the listener that the following fact doesn’t stop the main action. Use **despite** when you want a concise, slightly formal concession, as in: despite the rain, the parade marched on. It can precede a noun phrase (despite warnings) or a full clause (despite he was tired, he kept working – though idiomatically you’d say despite being tired). The construction signals that the second idea is unexpected given the first, but it does not imply causality, only contrast. It often feels more polished than its sibling in spite of, which is a bit more conversational.

Word Origin Despite comes from Old French despit, from Latin despectus 'a looking down on,' from de- 'down' and specere 'to look.' It originally meant contempt or scorn. The same root specere gives us inspect (look into), respect (look back at), and suspect (look under). So despite literally carries the idea of looking down on something, but now it means 'in defiance of.'
