guest

/ˈɡɛst/ noun A1

**Guest** is the person who steps over the welcome mat you didn't build, stays a night or two, or pops onto a TV show without a contract. In a hotel, they are the customer who checks in, pays, and enjoys the pillows. In computing, a guest is a temporary user given a key to a system they don't own. Even some insects sneak into another creature’s nest, living rent‑free. In all cases, a guest arrives, occupies space, and leaves when the invitation expires.

常与动词搭配:host/have guests(招待客人);注意与customer(顾客)在商业语境中的区别,guest更强调"被接待"的身份感。

Word Origin A great example of how ancient hospitality worked: guest comes from Proto-Germanic *gastiz, but its deeper PIE root *ghos-ti- meant both 'guest' and 'host' — because in early societies, the roles were reciprocal, bound by sacred duties of welcome. That's why guest and host are actually doublets, and the same root also gives us hospital, hospice, and even hostile (originally 'stranger' turned enemy).
