grout

/ˈɡɹaʊt/ noun C1

**Grout** is a powdery mixture, usually of cement, sand and water, that hardens into a dense filler for the gaps between tiles, bricks or stones. Builders spread it into the seams and let it set so the surface stays watertight and stable. When the mixture dries, it forms a smooth, seal‑like strip that protects against moisture and dirt. The texture can be sanded or unsanded depending on the width of the joint, and colors range from stark whites to muted earth tones, letting you either blend it in or make a decorative contrast. Applying grout involves pressing it into the joints with a rubber float, then wiping away excess before it cures. Over time the grout may discolor, so periodic cleaning or resealing keeps it looking fresh.

Word Origin From Old English grūt 'coarse meal, porridge' — originally, grout was a kind of coarse porridge. The same root gives us groats (hulled grain) and grit (small hard particles). When builders use grout to fill gaps, they're using a mixture that's like a gritty porridge. The word shifted from breakfast to construction, but the idea of a coarse, paste-like substance remains.
