cohesion

/koʊˈhiʒən/ noun B2

**Cohesion** is the glue that holds parts of a whole together, making them act as a single unit. It appears whenever individual elements stick to each other tightly. In everyday talk it describes the sense of unity in a team, a story, or a pile of the same kind of particles. In physics, cohesion describes the attractive forces between molecules of the same substance, which is why water beads on a leaf. In a paragraph, cohesion refers to the smooth flow created by linking words such as however and therefore. A group with high cohesion shares purpose, trust, and communication that keep it moving in the same direction. Writers can boost cohesion by repeating key ideas and using clear transitions. The word works equally well for tangible matter and for abstract collections of ideas.

Word Origin From Latin 'co-' (together) and 'haerere' (to stick) — literally 'sticking together.' The root 'hes' (from haerere) also gives us adhesive (sticking to) and, surprisingly, hesitate — originally meaning 'to stick fast, be stuck' in indecision. Cohesion is the force that keeps things stuck together.
