sooth

/sˈuθ/ noun B2

**Sooth** is the old‑fashioned way of saying something is the real deal, the unvarnished truth that even fortune‑tellers can’t fudge. It can also be the smooth talk you use to butter someone up, but at its core it always points to what actually is, not what might be imagined.

Word Origin Sooth is an old word for truth, from Old English sōþ, which comes from the PIE root *es- 'to be' — so truth is literally 'that which is'. That's why a soothsayer is a truth-teller, and forsooth means 'in truth'. The same root gives us is, yes, essence, and entity — all about being and reality. Sooth faded from common use but survives in these compounds.
