dejection

/dəˈd͡ʒɛkʃən/ noun B2

low spirits

Word Origin From Latin de- 'down' + iacere 'to throw' — literally 'thrown down'. Dejection is the state of being cast down in spirits. The root iacere is incredibly productive: eject (throw out), inject (throw in), project (throw forward), reject (throw back), subject (throw under). The -ion suffix makes it a noun. You can almost feel the downward throw of mood.
