embody

/ɪmˈbɑdi/ verb B2, C2

**Embody** means to give a visible, tangible shape to an idea, quality, or feeling, turning the intangible into something you can point to. When a character embodies bravery, his actions let you see courage in motion. The verb works for people, objects, works of art, laws, and even gestures, whenever something serves as a prime example of what it represents. A statue can embody freedom, a melody can embody melancholy, and a smile can embody goodwill. Using **embody** signals that the subject captures the essence of the abstract concept in a concrete form, making the idea easier to grasp.

Word Origin Embody is literally 'in-body' — the prefix em- is a form of en- 'in, into' (from Latin in-), and body is from Old English bodig. So to embody something is to give it a body, to make an idea physical. The same em- prefix appears in embed, embrace, and empower. So when a person embodies a quality, they are the living body of that idea.
