caitiff

/ˈkeɪtɪf/ adj B2

cowardly

Word Origin From Latin captivus 'captive' via Old French, meaning a wretched, cowardly person. The root is capere 'to take, seize'. So a caitiff is literally a captive, someone taken, and the meaning shifted to a despicable person. The same root gives us captive, capture, captivate, accept, concept, perceive, receive, except, intercept, capacity, capable. The PIE root *kap- is about grasping.
