confidence

/ˈkɑnfədəns/ noun B1

**Confidence** is the feeling that you can pull off a task without stumbling. It also describes the trust you place in a person, system, or idea. When you say you have confidence in a friend, you’re speaking of personal trust; when you speak of confidence in a measurement, you mean statistical certainty expressed as a confidence interval. The word can carry a sparkle of swagger when used about people, and a sober tone when used about data. Use it to convey certainty, optimism, or reliable authority, but remember that confidence can be earned, misplaced, or even contagious.

Word Origin From Latin con- (intensive) and fidere 'to trust' — literally 'with trust', a deep trust. The root fidere gives us fidelity, faith, and confide (to trust someone with secrets). The opposite is diffident (lacking trust).
