agnosticism

/æɡˈnɒstɪsɪzəm/ noun C1

the belief that it is impossible to know whether God exists

Word Origin Built from Greek a- 'without' and gnōsis 'knowledge' — literally 'the state of not knowing.' It was coined in the 19th century by Thomas Huxley to describe someone who doesn't claim to know if God exists. The root gignōskein gives us diagnosis (knowing through), prognosis (knowing before), and ignore (not knowing). The PIE root *ǵneh₃- also gives us know and can.
