appendage

/əˈpɛndɪdʒ/ noun B2

**Appendage** is a subordinate part that hangs off something larger, often a bodily limb or a peripheral organ. It can also describe any secondary component attached to a main structure. In everyday speech you might call a corkscrew on a bottle a decorative appendage, while a human arm is an essential appendage. Engineers refer to extra brackets or cables as appendages of a machine. The term also pops up in biology, where vestigial wings are called appendages that have lost their original function. Using it hints that the attached piece is dependent on, but not the core of, the thing it serves.

Word Origin Appendage comes from Latin appendere 'to hang something onto,' from ad- 'to' and pendere 'to hang.' So an appendage is something hanging on. Pendere gives us depend (hang from), suspend (hang under), pendulum, and appendix. The ad- assimilated to ap- before p. The -age suffix makes it a noun. So an arm is an appendage — it hangs from the body.
