pupil

/ˈpjupəɫ/ noun A1, B1, C1

**Pupil** is a small, dark opening in the eye that lets light in. It sits behind the iris and changes size to control how much light reaches the retina. The word also names a student who learns in a school setting. Pupil as an eye part is always lowercased, while pupil as a learner is often used in British contexts or in formal writing. In American English, student is the preferred term. The eye pupil dilates when you’re excited or in low light, showing a quick reflex your brain can't control. In a school, a pupil may sit at a desk, take notes, and listen to the teacher.

Word Origin Pupil is a great example of a word with two faces: it means both a student and the dark center of your eye. Both come from Latin words for 'little child' — pupillus (orphan boy) and pupilla (little girl, doll). The eye part got its name because when you look into someone's eye, you see a tiny reflection of yourself, like a little doll. The same root *pau- 'small, few' gives us pauper (poor person), poverty, and even puppy (a little dog). So a pupil is literally a 'little one' in two different ways.
