auspice

/ˈɔspɪs/ noun C1

a sign that foretells the future

Word Origin From Latin avis 'bird' and specere 'to look' — literally 'bird-watching.' In ancient Rome, augurs would observe the flight of birds to divine the will of the gods, and if the signs were favorable, it was 'auspicious.' That's why we say 'under the auspices of' meaning under favorable guidance. The root specere also gives us inspect, expect, and spectacle — all about looking. And avis gives us aviation and aviary.
