lief

/ˈɫif/ adv C1

gladly

Word Origin Lief is an archaic word meaning 'dear, beloved,' from Old English leof. It's related to love, which comes from the same PIE root *leubh- 'to care, desire.' Believe is from be- + lief, meaning 'to hold dear, trust.' Libido is also from this root. So lief is a sweet old word that survives in 'I would as lief' meaning 'I would as willingly.'
