willingly

/ˈwɪɫɪŋɫi/ adv B2 ✓

Of one’s own free will; freely and spontaneously.

Word Origin Willingly is built on will, from a Proto-Germanic root meaning 'to wish, want.' So doing something willingly is doing it with desire, not under compulsion. The -ing makes it an adjective (willing), and -ly turns it into an adverb. The same root gives us willful (full of will), willpower, and even freewill. The PIE root *wel- 'to wish' also appears in words like voluptuous and benevolent — all about wanting.
