sew

/ˈsoʊ/ verb A2 ✓

**Sew** means to stitch fabric together with a needle, pulling thread in and out until the pieces become one. It also describes slipping a ship onto the seabed, or pulling water out of a container like a reluctant plumber. When you **sew** something into something else, you enclose it with stitches, turning loose cloth into a tidy whole.

Word Origin Sew comes from Proto-Germanic siwjanan, from PIE *syu- 'to bind.' The same root gives us seam (the line where things are sewn together), seamstress, and seamy (the less attractive side, like the inside of a seam). The word is simple but ancient.
