hiccup

/ˈhɪkəp/ noun B1

**Hiccup** is a sudden little spasm of the diaphragm that pops out an involuntary "hic" sound, often appearing at the most inconvenient moments. It also describes any brief, unexpected glitch—a hiccup in a plan, a hiccup in a speech. When you hiccup, the sound escapes, and if you speak through it, each syllable carries that unmistakable bite. Minor setbacks are called hiccups, because they are brief, noisy, and usually resolved with a sigh or a glass of water.

Word Origin Hiccup is a playful word: hic imitates the sound, and up describes the sudden upward jerk of the diaphragm. The spelling hiccough came later, as people mistakenly thought it was related to cough. But it's really just a hic that goes up.
