dative

/ˈdeɪtɪv/ noun C1

The **dative** case marks the noun that receives something, the indirect object of a verb. In languages that keep cases, it slots the recipient, beneficiary, or target of an action. English often uses prepositions like to or for where a dative would sit in a heavily‑inflected tongue. German, Russian, and Latin still sprinkle the dative on nouns to show whose hand holds a gift, whose side a door opens onto, or which person a verb governs. Some verbs simply demand the dative, turning the whole sentence into a polite hand‑off of meaning.

【核心含义】与格,表示动词的间接宾语,即动作的接收者或受益者。

常见于德语、俄语等屈折语,英语常用介词to/for替代。需注意某些动词固定要求与格结构,如德语"helfen"(帮助)后接与格宾语。

【Significado central】El caso dativo marca al sustantivo que recibe algo, es decir, el objeto indirecto del verbo, indicando el destinatario, beneficiario o meta de una acción.

En inglés este caso no existe morfológicamente; se reemplaza con preposiciones como "to" o "for" (p. ej., "I gave the book to her", donde "to her" cumple la función del dativo).

Word Origin From Latin dare 'to give' — the dative case marks the recipient, the one to whom something is given. The breakdown dat+ive shows the root dat- (from dare) and the adjective suffix -ive. The same root gives us data (things given), donate, donor, and even edit (give out). The PIE root *do- meant 'to give.'
