altitude

/ˈæɫtəˌtud/ noun B1, B2

Altitude is the vertical distance of a place or object above a reference surface, most commonly sea level. It tells you how high something sits in the sky or on a mountain. Pilots, hikers, and weather forecasters all keep a close eye on it. When a plane climbs, its altitude climbs too, measured by instruments that compare air pressure to ground level. Mountaineers record the altitude of a summit to brag about reaching the roof of the world. Meteorologists use altitude to explain why temperatures drop as you rise, and why thin air makes breathing harder. In everyday talk, altitude can refer to any height above the chosen baseline, whether that baseline is sea level, the ground beneath you, or a planetary datum.

Word Origin Altitude comes from Latin altus 'high', and that same root gives us exalt (to raise up) and even haughty (from French haut 'high', meaning high-and-mighty). The -itude suffix is the same as in latitude and longitude. So altitude is your height above something.
