aide

/ˈeɪd/ noun B2, C1

**Aide** is a helpful sidekick, the person who runs errands for a boss, often a junior officer shadowing a senior one and known as an aide‑de‑camp. In older usage it can denote a father. In the verb aidar it appears as the first‑person singular present subjunctive and the third‑person singular present subjunctive.

Word Origin Aide comes from French aider 'to help,' from Latin adiutare, a frequentative of adiuvare 'to help' (ad- 'to' + iuvare 'to help'). So an aide is literally 'one who helps.' It's a doublet of aid. The root iuvare also gives us adjutant (a helper) and adjuvant (something that helps).
