phony
/ˈfoʊni/ adj A1, A2**Phony** describes anything that pretends to be genuine while actually being a clever imitation. A **phony** can be a counterfeit object, a fabricated story, or a person who wears a borrowed personality like an ill-fitting costume. When someone spouts opinions they never believed, they become a **phony** speaker. The verb form means to fake something, to dress up a lie in convincing clothing. In short, a **phony** is a master of the deceptive disguise.

En el habla coloquial se puede intensificar: "es un puro farsante", "qué farsante tan grande", "puro teatro". A diferencia de un simple "mentiroso", el farsante sostiene su engaño de manera prolongada, como si llevara una máscara permanente. No debe confundirse con "fraude" (que se refiere al acto o al objeto falsificado, no a la persona), ni con "hipócrita" (que finge cualidades morales o valores, mientras que el farsante puede fingir cualquier cosa: identidad, sentimientos, opiniones). Cuidado: tampoco es un falso cognado, pero la palabra inglesa no tiene relación con "fonía" ni con "teléfono"; su origen está en una jerga del inglés americano del siglo XIX.
