girth

/ˈɡɝθ/ noun C1

**Girth** is the measurement around the widest part of something, usually a cylinder‑like object. It is most often used for trees, trunks, or the circumference of a horse’s body. It gives a quick sense of bulk. It can be applied to any roundish object, from a tire to a waist, and is handy in contexts where diameter alone isn’t enough. In horticulture, a tree’s girth helps estimate age. In everyday speech, saying someone has a generous girth is a politely roundabout way to comment on size.

Word Origin Girth originally meant a belt or girdle — something that encircles. It comes from Proto-Germanic *gertjō, related to gird and girdle. The PIE root *gher- 'to grasp, enclose' also gives us yard (an enclosed space), garden, and orchard (originally 'garden of herbs'). So girth is the measure of what a belt would encircle.
